Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, New York, 1969

"I'd just arrived in New York and I didn't know anyone. I found out about a club downtown called Max's Kansas City. Andy Warhol and all those kinds of people went there, so I started going there every night. I was just finding really fascinating people that to me just looked interesting. "I said, 'Hey, come over.' Robert at that point wasn't a photographer and I didn't even know who Patti was, but we kind of hit it off. I really gravitated toward both of them. Patti, I think, was living at the Chelsea Hotel with her boyfriend. She was just this beautiful, androgynous woman. The level of absolute love between Patti and Robert was so profound. They just adored each other."
