Tom Waits at the Border, 1988

“I was hired through Sygma to shoot for Premiere Magazine on the film ‘Cold Feet’ filming near the border of Mexico and Arizona and Nogales. I’d been told he had no problem with me shooting him during filming or rehearsals on the set but he didn’t want to do any ‘set ups’. That’s not unusual. Many actors are uncomfortable doing still photo setups. We were shooting in the desert along the border of Arizona and Mexico and the crew broke for lunch. I noticed an ominous black thunderhead sky moving towards a mountaintop in the distance and I happened to be outside Tom’s trailer. I knocked on his door which he flung open with a little of the wtf do you want look…I didn’t say anything, I simply pointed at the black sky over the mountaintop…he looked at it…back at me and said “Should I wear the gun”?”.
