"Phoenix - Rise from the Ashes"
from Friday, May 28, 2021 to Saturday, July 17, 2021
Galerie XII Paris
This exhibition marks the start of a new collaboration with the Australian-born artist with this unpublished series. The show is included in the program Australia Now in France.
Vee Speers’ most recent work Phoenix, is a powerful and evocative story about women. Never afraid to push the boundaries, Speers takes us on an emotional journey with portraits and landscapes that are at once nostalgic and contemporary, hues faded, marking the passage of time. “Like some kind of illusion that seems suspended in the memories of a dramatic event, hope rises like a phoenix from the ashes, forging a path in a brave new world.” Botanical backdrops are inspired by Speers’ youth in Queensland, and reference the lush, dense vegetation, mangrove swamps and smoky cane fields of Northern Australia.
The exhibition's focus is on Phoenix butare also on view prints from the series The Birthday Party, Bulletproof, and Dystopia, which provide insight into the long career of the Australian artist who has been exploring human nature through enigmatic portraits for more than fifteen years.
