Lost in Meditation

The artist couple Clark & Pougnaud started working together in 1998. Based in Paris, they produce around ten images per year, creating a universe from the blend of painting, photography and design. Pougnaud is painter; her inspiration comes from the theatre, particularly scenery and set design. She creates the scenery and the settings in which they place models photographed in their studio. Clark has been working as a studio photographer for 25 years. Their work is centered on the movement of narrative figuration. Their originality can be found in the duality between the use of contemporary digital techniques – they won the Arcimboldo Prize for digital photographic creation – and a visual and pictorial reference to painters of the past (Tribute to Edward Hopper, HSBC Photo Prize 2006) or classical themes (Fairytales, Les bourgeoises d’Angoulême).
